Volunteer Spotlight: Bob Gauvin

After traveling the world with the U.S. Coast Guard, Bob Gauvin retired his sea-legs and settled in Spotsylvania County. For the past five years, he’s spent his Wednesday mornings waking up early to care for the lawn and handle general maintenance at Ellwood– part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
Charles Hall Museum and Heritage Center

This non-profit history museum features interpretive panels and maps that tell the story of over 3000 North Carolina Cherokee prisoners in several detachments who camped and walked through Tellico Plains on the first leg of their journey to live in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Visitors can view display cabinets of stone and clay tools and relics the local Overhill Cherokee used for farming, cooking, hunting, weapons and games.

Frank Leon Miller

Miller enlisted in the US Navy in August 1942. On April 12, 1945, a kamikaze struck the mast of Cassin Young and exploded. Miller was wounded in the leg and awarded a purple heart. On July 30, 1945, USS Cassin Young was struck by a kamikaze a second time. WT2c Miller was one of 22 sailors killed, passing later that day.

These actions ranged from faking illness to avoid work that enriched their enslavers to breaking tools, practicing traditional beliefs, and running away. These acts of resistance, also called “agency,” allowed enslaved people to express their humanity while being held in a system that denied it.

You can walk over to the Dune Overlook from the picnic area. Restroom facilities are also located at this location, and during the summer season drinking water is available.
