The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa was the site of the last concert performed by Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "the Big Bopper" Richardson hours before a tragic plane accident claimed their lives in February 1959. The performance at the Surf Ballroom has entered American cultural memory and played a major role on the early development of rock 'n' roll music.

Fort Des Moines is a military installation in Des Moines, Iowa. During World War I, the fort served as the first and only training site for African American officers. During World War II, Fort Des Moines was the first training site for the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), and the only training site for WAC and WAAC officers.

I really enjoy looking back at the previous year and recalling all the great work done by Lewis and Clark Trail staff and all the folks and organizations who combine their efforts. No one agency, organization or individual can claim the achievements that have taken place. It is always a team effort.

Clyde Milton Reasoner

Clyde Reasoner enlisted in the Navy on November 14, 1944. His mother signed a consent form, because he was only 17 years old. Reasoner reported for duty aboard USS Cassin Young (DD-793) on April 26, 1945. In the early morning hours of July 30, 1945, Cassin Young was hit by a kamikaze for a second time. At 18 years old, Clyde Reasoner was the youngest sailor aboard Cassin Young to die in action.

Carrie Chapman Catt (1859 -1947) began her career as a national women’s rights activist when she addressed the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1890 at their national convention in Washington DC. She quickly became a dedicated writer, lecturer, and recruiter for the suffrage movement. She also worked for peace and was a co-founder of the League of Women Voters.
