Oregon Trail Ruts State Historic Site , also called the Guernsey Ruts, is located where the geography of the area forced the Oregon Trail to change course. At this point, the Trail was blocked from continuing along the North Platte River by a steep ridge of sandstone rock. It had to go up and over the ridge in order to continue heading west.

When Carrie Lane Chapman Catt was 13-years-old and living in rural Charles City, Iowa, she witnessed something that would help to decide the course of her life. Her family was politically active and on Election Day in 1872, Carrie’s father and some of the male hired help were getting ready to head into town to vote. She asked her mother why she wasn’t getting dressed to go too. Her parents laughingly explained to their daughter that women couldn’t vote.

Born in Georgia in 1839, the son of an Irish-born slaveholder and a black woman, Michael Healy grew up amid the tumult of sectional conflict and civil war. Though he was born enslaved, he would go on to live an accomplished life at sea. At the peak of his career, Healy knew the expanse of the North Pacific and Arctic waters better than anyone.

Alexander Lemmon was an Irish immigrant who joined the Continental Army in 1775, fought in the attack of Quebec and survived the Siege of 1777. Although not many details of his life are known, the personal descriptions in his story go to show the humanity of all the forgotten soldiers of the American Revolution.

Hours: 8 am to 5 pm daily. Located in the South Rim Visitor Center's Plaza, adjacent to Parking Lot 4. During spring, summer and fall, guided bicycle tours are available. Some outdoor accessories are also on sale, like hats, sunglasses, water bottles and trekking poles.

Defiance House Archeological Site is a set of Ancestral Puebloan structures, petroglyphs, and pictographs tucked into a corner of Forgotten Canyon on lake Powell. It is only accessible by boat and then a hike. Conditions of the hike are not monitored, so we do not know if it is too muddy to go there today. There are no amenities at the site, take care of your needs before you arrive. Visit with respect.
