For the past five years, he’s spent his Wednesday mornings waking up early to care for the lawn and handle general maintenance at Ellwood– part of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.

Maple sugaring is one of the Anishinaabe/Ojibwe lifeways passed on to younger generations within the Grand Portage community. Ziinzibaakwad (maple sugar) is a traditional Anishinaabe/Ojibwe food. Producing it is an important community event where friends and family gather at the iskigamizigan (sugarbush) in a ininaatig (maple) grove.

The events of April 9, 1865 made Appomattox Court House and Wilmer McLean, owner of the home where Generals Grant and Lee met to discuss Lee’s surrender, well known. Yet, the names of the enslaved men and women who swept that doorstep, tidied the parlor before the Generals were shown in, minded the house, the children and the affairs of the McLean family are mostly unknown.

In early 1865, over 4,600 African Americans were enslaved in Appomattox County. On April 9, 1865, after four years of war, Federal victory brough the promise of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to Appomattox Court House and made emancipation a reality for all enslaved people in this region, including half of Appomattox County’s population. John Martin House

This property, and several of its improvements, is linked to Cherokee leader John Martin. Martin built the main house (on the opposite side of Dalton Pike) approximately 1835 after being driven out of Murray County, Georgia. Martin, who has been described as "a distinguished judge in the courts of the Cherokee Nation, and also the national treasurer," was forced to sell his property in 1837, just prior to the Cherokee Removal.

Located at Market Plaza, the South Rim's business center, the main lodge has a cafeteria style restaurant, coffee shop/cafe, gift shop and an outdoor patio tavern with a food menu. Pet friendly rooms are available. it's a short walk across the parking lot to Canyon Village Market (General Store and Deli), and the U.S. Post Office. From the lodge, it averages around a one mile (1.6 km) walk, along paved footpaths, to the edge of Grand Canyon.

Camper Services (Laundry and Showers) is located near the entrance to Mather Campground. Hours of Operation: 7 am to 10 pm daily. Last laundry load: 9 pm — Last shower: 9:45 pm. The Camper Store is closed at this time. Adjacent to Camper Services is a free dump station and potable water filling station for RVs. Several picnic tables are located outside the building.
