Nicodemus National Historic Site
School District Number 1

Nicodemus residents saw education as foundational to their community and organized School District No. 1 in 1879, the first in Graham County. After the previous 1887 schoolhouse burned down in 1916, the District No. 1 Schoolhouse was built in 1918 and used by the district until it closed in the early 1960s.

Originally serving as part of the women’s ward for the Dakota Hospital for the Insane, the building was in use until the 1980s. Today, however, it houses the Dakota Territorial Museum and is upkept by the Yankton County Historical Society.

Charles Lee, former British Army officer, became the second highest ranking general of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. On June 28, 1776 he oversaw the victory at the Battle of Sullivan's Island in Charleston, SC. One of the oldest public parks in Washington, D.C, the land was designated as a public park on the original 1791 L'Enfant plan for the city. During the Civil War, a temporary hospital, known as "Lincoln Hospital" was constructed on the site for wounded Union soldiers.
