Nicodemus National Historic Site
School District Number 1

Nicodemus residents saw education as foundational to their community and organized School District No. 1 in 1879, the first in Graham County. After the previous 1887 schoolhouse burned down in 1916, the District No. 1 Schoolhouse was built in 1918 and used by the district until it closed in the early 1960s.

St. Francis Hotel

The St. Francis Hotel has lived many lives: first as a place of business operated by early settlers Zachary and Jenny Fletcher, then as private residence and restaurant of the Switzer family. The original two-story limestone structure was built in 1881 and was a successful hotel in Nicodemus. The Switzer family bought the building in 1921 and built several additions while they lived there.

It is unclear if this building was constructed or moved here in 1951, but it was used to house Ruby and Robert Hoolihan, employees of the Bond Family who owned the land from 1918 to 1963.

Otero Cabin

The Otero (Cupit) Cabin is the oldest standing log structure in the park, built back in 1915. The Oteros, who owned the land from 1899 to 1918, grazed sheep on the mountains and cattle and horses in the valleys. Frederico Otero lived there until 1917, but later occupants included staff working seasonally on the ranch. Names carved over the door frame include Danny, Shawn, and Nathan Cupit and are dated 1967 and 1977.

The Point Reyes mountain beaver—a primitive rodent that isn’t a beaver—is a sort of mythical creature at Point Reyes National Seashore. Almost no one has seen one in-person with their own eyes. Not even National Park Service Wildlife Biologists Taylor Ellis and Matt Lau, who just completed their first season of surveys as a part of a 2-year mountain beaver habitat modeling project in collaboration with UC Berkeley. Still, the survey season was a great success.

Before Shirley Graham married W.E.B. Du Bois in 1951, she had earned a national reputation as a playwright, composer, conductor, director, and author. Born to a A.M.E. minister and a European mother, Graham was raised to appreciate Black culture and music. From a young age, her parents instilled in her the importance of social justice and the uplift of the Black Community. For her lifelong dedication, we honor her as an ancestor.

South Kaibab Trail

This well-maintained dirt trail offering wonderful expansive views. This is a great trail for short day hiking trips into the canyon of half a day or less. During winter months foot traction and hiking poles are advised when trail surfaces are icy. There is no public parking at the South Kaibab Trailhead. Please park at the Visitor Center, then take the Kaibab (Orange) Route shuttle bus to the trailhead. It is a 9-minute ride from the Visitor Center to the Trailhead.

Bright Angel Trailhead

Bright Angel Trailhead is located just west of Bright Angel Lodge, Lookout Studio, and Kolb Studio. At 6,840 feet (2,085 m), it provides access for hikers and mules to many inner canyon destinations. From the Hermit Road Interchange shuttle bus stops, it is a short walk to the east, and up a hill, on a paved footpath to the trailhead. This winter, a number of trail closures (on parts of Bright Angel Trail) are in effect. Click on the link for details.

Located at Market Plaza, the South Rim's business center, the main lodge has a cafeteria style restaurant, coffee shop/cafe, gift shop and an outdoor patio tavern with a food menu. Pet friendly rooms are available. it's a short walk across the parking lot to Canyon Village Market (General Store and Deli), and the U.S. Post Office. From the lodge, it averages around a one mile (1.6 km) walk, along paved footpaths, to the edge of Grand Canyon.
