William Henry Jackson was a painter and photographer known for his images of the American West. His experience on the Oregon Trail as a bullwhacker led him to create some of the most detailed paintings of pioneer trail life. He participated in the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871, which led to the creation of Yellowstone National Park.

Marie Equi was born in 1872 in New Bedford. A homesteader in Oregon, Marie became a physician and activist. Equi was placed in charge of obstetrics at the United States Army General Hospital in the Presidio of San Francisco. She was subsequently decorated by the U.S. Army for her humanitarian efforts.
DC Front Runners Memorial Grove

This grove of trees in Rock Creek Park was planted and is cared for by the DC Front Runners, a local LGB running and walking club. In 1988, they collaborated with the National Park Service to establish this memorial grove along a favorite route in honor of members who lost their lives during the AIDS epidemic.

Earl Hall, located on the campus of Columbia University in the New York City borough of Manhattan in New York, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. Earl Hall is significant for its early and significant association with Columbia’s LGBT community. Columbia University was the first university in the United States to have a gay student group – the Student Homophile League -- founded in 1966 and officially recognized by the university in 1967.

In 1957, Little Rock’s Philander Smith College, an historically black college, opened its doors to the “Little Rock Nine” to help them prepare for their first days as students at Central High School. Barred from entering the all-white high school by order of the governor, the students struggled to keep from falling behind in their coursework, aided by Philander Smith College faculty members.

Built in 1762 as a wedding present, this was the home of Elias Hasket Derby (1739-99) and Elizabeth Crowninshield Derby (1727-99) for the first 20 years of their marriage. They lived here with their seven children and enslaved at least two people of African descent. The Derby family became one of Salem’s wealthiest merchants, their wealth was tied to their trade in goods produced by slave plantations in the Caribbean Islands.

The building, known as one of the largest secular adobe buildings in the United States, was constructed in the 1936-1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and National Historic Landmark. The building not currently open to the public.
