Upcoming Workshop: Art in the Parks

Explore the power of art to make connections across lessons, age-levels, and disiplines.
A summer workshop for K-12 teachers and librarians designed to help educators tap into the transformative powers of art and nature while studying conservation history, landscape painting, and monumental sculpture. Through this workshop, we hope to encourage teachers to incorporate the art collections at the National Parks into their curricula and to bring their students to the National Parks to experience place-based education and view these national treasures in person.
Participants in this free workshop will draw upon the parks' art collections and inspiring landscape while learning from master teachers, National Park Service staff, and each other.
Participants will:
Explore a variety of works of art in the National Park Service's collection and its relevance to students.
Learn how to "read" works of visual art and participate in Visual Thinking Strategies.
Experiment with ways to incorporate art collections and concepts into the classroom.
Learn about place-based education and field trip offerings from the National Park Service.
Gather with other educators in a collaborative, inspirational, and restorative environment ahead of the new school year.
Day 1 of the workshop will take place at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock, VT. Vermont's only National Park preserves the history of land conservation. It includes a working forest and a world-class collection of Hudson River School paintings. Day 2 will take place at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park in Cornish, NH. This National Park for the Arts preserves the former estate of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It includes a historic house and studio, rotating gallery spaces, and large bronze sculptures installed throughout the grounds.
Registration Information
This workshop is open to all educators including classroom teachers, librarians, and school administrators. Priority given to participants who can attend both days of the workshop. Lunch and snacks provided. Stipends of $100 and certificates will be awarded to participants who complete the entire workshop. Space is limited. Applications accepted until July 26, 2023.
This workshop is coordinated by Susan Piccoli, Woodstock Union High School and Middle School librarian and recipient of the 2021 Victor R. Swenson Award from the Vermont Humanities Council in collaboration with the National Park Service.
