Volcano Adventure Camp (VAC) is a youth camping facility located inside Lassen Volcanic National Park. This designated facility provides opportunities for a wide range of youth organizations including school groups, other educational groups, and scouting organizations to introduce young visitors to their national park.The facility was completed in 2016--just in time to celebrate the park and National Park Service centennial.

 
 
 

How to Apply

Season Dates: mid-June through mid-September
Youth groups can apply for a grant up to $1,000 to cover related costs including transportation, food, and camping supplies through the Lassen Park Foundation (LPF). Applications are accepted through March 31. Grant funding may cover: waived park admission, waived campground fees, camping equipment, tents, sleeping bags, hiking gear, reusable water bottles, gas expense, charter bus rentals, and food for trip. Groups that would like to stay at the Volcano Adventure Camp, but do not require a grant, may apply through a separate reservation application that will be available on the LPF website after May 1.

 

What is Available at the VAC?

The Volcano Adventure Camp supports low-cost group camping experiences by reducing the amount of equipment required and providing necessary amenities for first-time campers. The following facilities and items are provided for groups at the VAC.

Canvas Cabins
Ten cabins (in two groups of five) each sleep up to 8 people.

Stacked Cots
Each cabin contains four stacked cots.

Picnic Pavilions
Two covered and screened pavilions each contain a cold-water sink for dishwashing, a propane barbeque grill (propane provided), and bear lockers for food storage.

Campfire Circles
Two areas provide seating and space for programs and activities.

Ranger-led Programs

Guided programs and activities are provided to facilitate the immersive learning experience.

Hot Showers
Solar-powered showers are available in a single, shared building between the two cabin groupings.

Vault Toilets
A total of six toilets are available in three buildings (toilet paper provided).

Trash and Recycling
Receptacles are located near the pavilions and at other areas in the camp.

Cleaning Supplies
Items such as brooms, dustpans, and cleaning solutions are provided for use in the pavilions and cabins.

Tent sites
Four tent campsites (tents not provided) for use if needed.
 

What Should My Group Provide/Bring?

Groups attending the VAC should plan on bringing the following items to the camp:

  • Transporation to and from the facility
  • Cooking utensils
  • Lighting: flashlights/lanterns (there is no electricity in the camp)
  • Food plus coolers and ice for storage
  • Sleeping gear: sleeping bags, pillows
  • Shower items: soap, shampoo, conditioner, towels, sandals (recommended)

The Lassen Park Foundation (LPF) and Lassen Volcanic National Park have been introducing youth to the joys of camping in a national park since 1996. The Volcano Adventure Camp was completed through a partnerhsip between LPF and Lassen Volcanic National Park. The project was funded in part by park entrance fees from visitors and contributions from individual donors.
