Lassen Volcanic National Park Photograph Archives

Comprised of more than 6,000 images dating between the 1850s and the 1970s; the Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) Photograph Archives document the natural and cultural history of and surrounding area.

Collection Guides

The LAVO Photograph collections are described and inventoried in two collection guides, which provide background information on the organization, person, or family who created or collected the photographs, an overview of the collection and its arrangement, and a detailed inventory.

Accessing the Collections

Online Gallery

Digital reproductions of (LAVO) photograph archives (except Collection 5) are available online at NPGallery. The filenames correspond with those use in the Collection Guides, but have been simplified to the collection and item number (e.g. the file name for Collection 1 item 1 is C1.1). Higher resolution versions of archive photographs may be available upon request.

Archive Facility

Physical collections items are housed in secure, non-browsing stacks at a National Park Service storage facility in Orick, CA. Collection items are available for viewing by the public by appointment and cannot be checked out. You may request a digital copy of materials not yet available in the online gallery.

Citation and Copyright

The preferred credit line for use of images in LAVO Photograph Archives is: Lassen Volcanic National Park, PH Coll[#].[Item#], e.g. Lassen Volcanic National Park, PH Coll 10.1.

National Park Historic Photograph Collection

The National Park Service (NPS) Historic Photograph Collection includes a small number of photos featuring Lassen Volcanic National Park. The entire collection is comprised of more than two million images, which cover a wide variety of subjects.

Accessing the Images

Digital reproductions of images by NPS photographers George A. Grant and Allan Rinehart are available in NPGallery. Filenames for items from the NPS Historic Photograph Collection contain " HFC" and an item number (e.g. LAVO_HFC_1).
