At this time, research is ongoing to provide a more complete biography of James B. White. He was associated with James B. White and Company, a manufacturer of manganese ore. In regards to involvement in manganese ore, the following comes from: Thomas Leonard Watson, Granites of the Southeastern Atlantic States, Bulletin No. 426, U.S. Department of the Interior, United States Geological Survey (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1907): "The year 1867 also marked the opening of the Crimora mine in the valley of Virginia. It was worked by a stock company for several years; then operations were suspended and until 1882 only occasional small quantities were mined. In 1882 it was leased by James B. White & Co. of Pittsburg [sic] and operations were begun on a large scale. Later it was acquired by the American Manganese Company." |
