Henry Sellers McKee was born on March 5, 1843, in Pittsburgh, PA to Thomas and Henrietta "Hetty" Zillhart McKee. McKee joined his father Thomas, his uncles Samuel, John, and Daniel, and his grandfather William, in the glassmaking business. He had 11 brothers and sisters and his brothers Frederick and James joined him in the glassmaking business, McKee Brothers. He married Jeannette E. Hartupee, and the City of Jeannette, PA, was named after her. McKee served as the president of the First National Bank of Birmingham. He incorporated the use of natural gas in glass manufacturing. He was a member of the Duquesne Club. He served with fellow South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club members Calvin Wells, James W. Brown, and Maxwell K. Moorhead as director of the Exchange Bank of Pittsburgh, located on Fifth Avenue. He and fellow South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club members Charles J. Clarke and Reuben Miller, served as directors of the Western Insurance Co., established in 1849. The McKee family resided at 230 Ridge Avenue, Allegheny and had two children: Thomas M., born 1854 and A. Hartupee McKee, born in 1871. |
