Collections

The museum collection contains a variety of objects directly related to the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889. The collection is made up entirely of cultural objects, the largest section being archeological. Our collection is comprised photographs, newspaper articles, books, and many personal items found in the aftermath of the flood. Items of note include: Reverend David J. Beale’s original Morgue Book that contained descriptions of flood victims, several objects that belonged to the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, period photographs taken in the 1880s by club member Louis Semple Clarke, and much more.

 

This original morgue book is from 1889 and was compiled by Reverend David Beale, Chairman of the Committee of Morgues. The 19th century tan ledger is approximately 12 inches high and 8 inches wide.

A figurine that was pulled from the floodwaters in 1889. The object was gifted to Johnstown Flood National Memorial in 2020.

A 19th century metal and glass pocket watch that was owned by Andrew C. Young, who died in the flood. A chain and key are attached. The pocket watch was gifted to Johnstown Flood National Memorial in 1991.

The time on the pocket watch is stopped at 4:11 pm, a few minutes after the flood reached Johnstown.
