Accessibility

The Thomas Condon Visitor Center is located in the Sheep Rock Unit of the monument, nine miles west of Dayville, Oregon. The parking lot has a non-sloping paved approach to the visitor center. The fossil museum, theater, bookstore, restrooms, and drinking fountains are wheelchair accessible. The park film is shown with captions on at all times although audio description and hearing assistance devices are available upon request at the front desk. Touch exhibits including a wide variety of fossil replicas are available in the center.

The James Cant Ranch Historic District is located a quarter mile from the visitor center and houses the park's headquarters. The ranch house is open on limited days in the summer and contains a cultural museum, restrooms, and a drinking fountain which are all wheelchair accessible.

Wheelchairs: One wheelchair is available for checkout to be used within the Thomas Condon Visitor Center. Another wheelchair is available for checkout to be used within the James Cant Ranch House. No advance reservations are required; please inquire at the front desk.

 

A portion of the Painted Cove Trail is a boardwalk which is wheelchair accessible.

Trails and Overlooks: Most of the park trails and overlooks are not considered accessible. Trails are surfaced with loose gravel, have drop-offs, or are steep. Please use your best judgement based on your abilities. The only trail that is wheelchair accessible is a portion of the Painted Cove Trail in the Painted Hills Unit that is on boardwalk.

Picnic Areas: Picnic tables accessible to visitors in wheelchairs are available at all three units of the monument.

Water and Restrooms: Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are available at all three units of the monument. Water fountains are also wheelchair accessible, but all outdoor water sources at picnic areas are turned off during colder months when they are vulnerable to freezing. In the winter, the visitor center water fountains are the only ones within the monument available.
