There was virtually no overlap between the mining and recreation eras on Isle Royale. The transition to resorts and cottages in 1892 was largely a method for mining-focused land holding companies to recoup what beame considered to be a poor investment. The Johns Family was at the apex of the transition, switching from running a boarding house for miners to operating a public hotel.
