Restoration in action!
The Truman Farm Home is under construction. At the end of September, crews put up construction fencing and marked utilities. Last week, construction crew began excavating the farm home foundations. Another crew from NPS started digging holes for trees along the property lines. A Student Conservation Corps crew will be planting native trees here at the end of the month.
Archeologists from The National Park Service Midwest Archeological Center monitored the digging. They looked through the soil for any archeological resources or materials. They found a hitching post ring in the foundation trench along the north side of the home and a horseshoe near the property line on the south side.
Archeologists only found a few objects in the soil because the area around the home has not been disturbed since the home was built in 1894-1895.
