Heritage Documentation Programs recently completed supplemental documentation of the Seaplane Hangar at Miller Field (HABS NY-5671) for Gateway National Recreation Area. Miller Field was the only aerial coast defense station established on the East Coast, and the seaplane hangar, built in 1919 with additions in 1939, played a significant role in the operations of the field. The National Park Service plans to repurpose the structure, which was extensively damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, as an amphitheater.

Staff architects Dana Lockett and Ryan Pierce laser scanned the structure to create an accurate three dimensional point cloud representation of the site. This data was used to produce a fly-through video of the point cloud and a panoramic photo virtual tour for site interpretation. This new data supplements earlier documentation that included measured drawings completed in 1978-79. Staff historian Justine Christianson wrote the historical report and staff photographer Jarob Ortiz produced updated large-format photographs.
