Harpers Ferry National Historical Park preserves the sites of John Brown’s Fort, Harpers Ferry’s historic Lower Town, remnants of 19th century industrial might on Virginius and Hall’s Islands, the campus of Storer College, and portions of the battlefields where Union and Confederate soldiers clashed for control of the strategic town. These sites tell some of the most important chapters of the American story, especially the movement from the battles of the Civil War to the struggles and successes of the civil rights movement. While the park protects and interprets these important historic sites and hallowed grounds, Harpers Ferry NHP also offers numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation, from rock climbing to hiking.
