Colorado River Mile -12 Slough Channelization

Construction is planned to start on March 1 and be completed by June with equipment staging in preparation for construction to begin as early as February 26. Access to the river may be temporarily restricted during the equipment staging period only.

Decades of climate-driven drought, and a consistent imbalance between supply and demand for Colorado River water have led to low reservoir levels in the Colorado River Basin. Low water levels have implications to rivers located both upstream and downstream of the reservoirs, including the introduction of invasive fish. Public review and comment on an Environmental Assessment to analyze a proposal to pursue options to prevent reproduction of smallmouth bass and other warm water non-native fish in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Public comments will be accepted through Oct. 14, 2024.

NPS is initiating a Draft Environmental Assessment to analyze Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s proposed Colorado River slough channelization project at River Mile -12. Pre-NEPA Open House on July 23 in Page, Ariz. and July 25 in Marble Canyon, Ariz.

Starting next week, the National Park Service (NPS) will begin active efforts to remove invasive smallmouth bass and green sunfish from the Colorado River below the Glen Canyon Dam in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

On July 1, 2022, juvenile smallmouth bass were found in the Colorado River below the Glen Canyon Dam. Smallmouth bass are a predatory non-native fish that have adversely impacted native and federally protected fish in the upper basin of the Colorado River over the last 20 years. The National Park Service (NPS) is working closely with partners and stakeholders to coordinate rapid response actions to address this finding in accordance with previously approved management plans.
