During the recent rehabilitation of Little Round Top, the park aimed to tackle degrading vegetation and significant erosion that had occurred on the summit over decades. Revegetation on the site required balancing the return of portions of the hill to its July 1863 character with the needs and impact of hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Carefully chosen trees create an open woodland, similar to what local farmers would have used for woodstock and harvest before the battle. The long roots of native grasses and flowering plants will help slow erosion by better anchoring the hill’s soil and absorbing excess rainwater. Temporary plantings of annual rye (they look like dried grass) help stabilize the soil while the new plantings take root and grow over the summer and fall.
