How will COVID-19 affect my visit?

Gateway National Recreation Area is open, but there are some changes in operations- UPDATED November 23, 2020

Parking fees are not being collected. Parking fees are only collected at Riis Beach and Sandy Hook between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.

Picnic Areas:
Some designated picnic areas will reopen to the public. The Sandy Hook picnic area and picnic areas that require permits remain closed until further notice..

  • Sandy Hook Guardian Park (closed)
  • Miller Field Picnic Area (closed, requires a permit)
  • Fort Tilden Picnic Area (closed, requires a permit)
  • Canarsie Pier Picnic Area (open)
  • Jacob Riis Park Picnic Area (open)

Picnicking outside of designated picnic-barbecuing areas:

  • Barbecuing is not allowed.
  • Group picnics are not allowed.

Sports Fields and Courts:

Basketball and tennis courts have reopened. Participants should continue to wear face coverings, follow social distancing protocols and avoid participating in high-contact games such as pick-up basketball.

Athletic permits for youth sports are cancelled until further notice. This is in keeping with NYC Parks Department's decision to revoke youth league permits due to the temporary closing of NYC's public schools. The city's COVID-19 infection rate has reached the critical 3% threshold.

Archery:

Floyd Bennett Field Archery Range has reopened. Permits are required to use the archery field. Permits are $75 annually. 2020 Achery permits are sold out. Please call (718) 338-3799 for more information.

Playgrounds:

Playgrounds are open throughout the park.

Campgrounds:

All Campground locations are closed for the summer of 2020.

Permits (other than sports):

Permits for most events and activities are not currently being issued.

Fishing Permits:

2020 Permits are on sale online. Please visit pay.gov to purchase your permit. Permits cannot be picked up. Please have your permit mailed to you. Permits are $50 plus a $5 handling fee. 2019 permits are no longer being honored. (Only 2020 4x4 permits are allowed at Breezy Point, and these are sold out for the year).

Visitor Centers, Ranger Stations and History Houses are closed until further notice. On-site programs are suspended until further notice.

Camping:

Sandy Hook Campground is closed for the 2020 season.

Bathrooms:

Bathroom facilities are open.

Food Service:

Food truck services have ended for the season.

Sports and group activities:

Group sports, group activities, and gatherings are not allowed.

Ferry Service:

The ferry service has ended for the season.

2020 permits are on sale through pay.gov . 2019 permits are no longer being honored. Permits cannot be picked up, please select the mail option. Please note, permits are only required at Sandy Hook after hours.

Beaches:
Lifeguards have ended for the season.

Current Beach Rules prohibit:

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Tents or shelters (baby tents allowed, a baby or toddler must be present)
  • Barbecuing and open fires
  • Group gatherings including group picnics
  • Sports
  • Glass containers
  • Coolers that are more than 24 quarts in size per group.
  • Dogs and kites from March 15-September 15. (Leashed dogs are allowed on bay-side beaches)
  • Entering areas with symbolic fencing
  • Climbing on rocks/groins
  • Accessing the dunes (except at designated dune crossings)

Standard Operations:

  • Alcohol is prohibited except by permit.

  • Smoking is only permitted in designated parking areas.

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times, and are not allowed on the beach between March 15 and September 15.

  • Carry-in carry-out garbage policy is in effect.

Jamaica Bay Unit Operations and Temporary Changes in Service:

Floyd Bennett Field:

Open to the public. The Ryan Visitor Center remain closed until further notice. Campgrounds are closed for the 2020 season. All ranger programs and events have been canceled.

The beach is open for recreational activities, such as walking and running.

Fishing/Parking Permits:

2020 permits are on sale through pay.gov. 2019 permits are no longer being honored. Permits are required at all times at Crooke's Point. Permits are only required after hours for the rest of Staten Island. Permits cannot be picked up, please select the mail option.

Bathrooms:

Bathrooms are available at the Beach Center and limited port-a-johns are available throughout Great Kills Park.

Playgrounds:

Playgrounds are open.

Picnicking:
Barbecuing and group picnicking are not allowed within the Campground area or elsewhere within Fort Wadsworth.

Campground:
The campground is closed for the 2020 season.
Barbecuing and group picnicking are not allowed within the Campground area.

Porta-johns available next to Visitor Center. Bathrooms currently unavailable.
