We Are All In This Together

Have you ever heard the phrase “We are all in this together"? Recently, we have been using this phrase to encourage the nation to come together to help stop the spread of COVID-19. However, this phrase has been around for a long time. It was used during World War II when adults and children worked together to gather materials that could be recycled and turned into different supplies for soldiers. During this activity you will learn how children your age worked with their community to make a difference in World War II. Then we will explore ways that you too can make a difference in your community.

• Paper

• Writing utensil

• (optional) Color pencils or crayons

• (optional) Electronic device to take a photo

Instructions:

Please view the following video to understand how children during World War II came together to help their community during a difficult time. Everyone was doing their part, and this is how they helped.

STEP 1: Watch the video below.
STEP 2: Pay attention to how kids were helping make a difference.
STEP 3: Write down at least 2 examples on your paper.

In the video, you saw photos of kids who found different ways to help their community. Their dedication made a huge impact during World War II! Let’s take some time to think about how you can make a difference in your community.

Instructions:

STEP 1: Write a list of 3 things that are important to your community. Below are some suggestions to help you get started:

• Stopping the spread of COVID-19.

• Reducing litter and recycling.

• Improving outdoor play spaces.

STEP 2: Now that you have written down 3 things that are important to your community, write down at least 1 reason for each of those things explaining why it matters to you or your community. What does it help solve, or change, or positively impact?

STEP 3: On a separate piece of paper, draw a picture of how you can get involved to help. The drawing should show how you have done your part to help your community, similar to the drawing to the above.

STEP4: We'd love to see your drawings! If you'd like to share, ask an adult to help you take a photo and e-mail it to e-mail us. We look forward to your seeing your drawings and thank you for helping your communities. Remember, “We Are All In This Together”!
