Upcoming Training Classes for Historical Interpreter Volunteers

The park has a very vibrant team of volunteers who provide visitor services at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center, the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center, Chatham, and the “Stonewall” Jackson Death Site. The first step to volunteering is to attend an 8-hour class “Orientation to the National Park Service and Informal Interpretation.” Our next training session on “Orientation to the National Park Service and Informal Interpretation” will be scheduled for the beginning of summer. If you would like to be placed on our mailing list for this training, please email Greg Mertz (greg_mertz@nps.gov).

What does training include?

The classes will include an orientation to the National Park Service and the park organizational structure, definitions of some commonly used phrases, and an introduction to the volunteer program. They will also cover Informal Interpretation – the kind of experiences we encounter at the visitor centers and historic structures. These unstructured conversations allow the visitors to lead the course of the exchange, and therefore vary greatly. Because we never know what a visitor may be interested in talking about, preparing for informal interpretation in many ways requires more preparation than formal interpretation (talks or tours). The majority of the classroom training will include scenarios where we will role-play some of the typical -- and not so typical -- things that happen at visitor center information desks or when working at an historic structure.

Sounds great! How do I attend?

To RSVP for the training and obtain details and directions, or if you have any questions, you may reach Supervisory Historian Greg Mertz via e-mail at greg_mertz@nps.gov or at his office at 540-693-3200 x4100. If you are interested but cannot make this training, please let Greg know you wish to be notified when we offer the next training.
