Explore the site safely
- Running through the buildings and historic site, climbing on building frames, rivers edge and other features may cause serious injury to self and damage to historic resources.
- Historic buildings have uneven walking surfaces and become slippery in rainy or snowy weather.
- Pathways around the historic site are gravel trails, they may be uneven in areas and have rodent or animal impacts. Please watch your step.
Nature and Wildlife
- Respect all of Fort Union's wildlife. For your safety, watch but do not feed, touch, or tease any animals. All wild animals may have fleas, lice and could carry communicable diseases.
- Please watch your step when walking around the historic site. Animal burrows and rodent holes are a common tripping hazard.
- Feeding animals of any kind is prohibited.
Mosquitoes and Ticks
Mosquitoes and ticks are an annual seasonal presence at Fort Union from June to August. Be sure to pack Bug repellant!

Weather in Western North Dakota can be harsh, with extremes in temperature and sudden, violent storms. Be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
