Fort Scott National Historic Site and its Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) will be hosting two events this month. The first is Junior Ranger Day, which will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2019, Visitors are invited to explore the park even further by participating in our interactive junior ranger programs. .Our three junior ranger books will be offered with the recommended age brackets of 3-5, 5-7, and 8-up. There will also be a new activity available for adults called the Fort Inspector Program. This program will test your I-Spy skills and will keep you on your toes as you search for items on site. To participate in either program stop by the visitor center anytime between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm that day.
Upon completion of the Junior Ranger Program, you will be awarded a Junior Ranger badge and will be sworn in as an official Junior Ranger. Both programs are free of charge.

The following Saturday, July 27, the YCC will lead an event called Texting and Twitter: 1840s style. Historic methods of communication will be explored at different stations including letter writing, Morse code, and newspapers of the time. Activities will include deciphering a message using Morse code, writing a letter using a quill pen and ink well, and composing a tweet for a historic news story. The stations will be open from 10 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

The site exhibit areas and visitor center are open daily from 8:00 am -5:00 pm daily. The park grounds are open daily from ½ hour before sunrise until ½ hour after sunset. There is no entrance fee. For more information, call 620-223-0310.
