National Road Heritage Corridor

The National Road was the first federally funded highway. It was built in the early 1800s along the same corridor Washington travelled in the 1750s. The Mount Washington Tavern, located in the park, operated during the heyday of the National Road. The story of the National Road is told in the Fort Necessity/National Road Interpretive and Education Center. You can relive the spirit of a growing America by travelling the road and visiting the historic homes, toll houses, and scenic vistas. Visit the National Road Heritage Corridor website.
