Post Commanders
The Civil War years at Fort Larned were at best a holding pattern in terms of military action. With the national government's attention focused on war in the east, the frontier outposts were manned mainly with volunteer state and militia troops. Their job consisted mostly of keeping the Indians in check. They were mostly successful at this task, however, since they these troops came from the local area, their interests were often local in nature.
