[RG 94, entry 297, 5397 ACP 1883 Nolan] 933 Penna Ave. Washington D.C. December 15, 1870 Captain Jas [?] McMillan Sir: In compliance with endorsement of yesterday on my letter requesting that certain officers be summoned as witnesses in my case I have the honor to state that Captain H.E. Alvord was Regimental Adjutant of the 10th Cavalry and I desire his testimony as to my character and standing in my regiment, as a Troop Commander. The additional testimony which I wish to obtain from Lieuts Bauzhof [?] and Raulston 10th Cavalry is to show that tying-up was the usual punishment for permitting horses to run loose and that it was approved by the Post Commander and that generally, such minor offenses as were not deemed of sufficient importance to be tried by a court-martial were punishable by tying up and log carrying and by none more severely than the Post Commander in such instances as came under his notice.
