Rogers Aston Artwork

Rogers Aston (1918-1999) of Roswell, New Mexico, was a rancher and an oilman, a collector, and an artist. His life-size bronze Infantryman greets visitors outdoors at the New Mexico Military Institute. He was well-known for his attention to detail and for his portrayal of action, especially in Indian Wars subjects.

 

FODA 4147 Apache Warrior 1870.  Bronze.  Apache man, standing, weight resting on left leg, right knee bent and foot on rock; holds Sharps rifle in right hand, rifle butt resting on right thigh; left arm bent with hand on hip. Wears Apache high moccasins with upturned toes, breech clout, fringed jacket with conchos, war cap with feathers.  On walnut base with brass plaque bearing title.  On front bottom of bronze, incised: "APACHE WARRIOR 1870"; on back, bottom: "Santa Fe Bronze © R ASTON 5/25."

FODA 4148 Buffalo Soldier. Bronze.  Head and upper torso of 9th Cavalry soldier, Troop D.  Gaze is to right.  Wears Army blouse, kepi with insignia, Congressional Medal of Honor, carbine sling with 1-toothed buckle in front.  On walnut base with brass plaque: "BUFFALO SOLDIER / BY / ROGERS ASTON."  On back of bronze, incised: `SGT. HENRY JOHNSON / "BUFFALO SOLDIER" / © R. ASTON 7/20/1979.'  To left in smaller letters: "Santa Fe /Bronze."
