Shoshone Lake Geyser Basin
Located on the southwest side of Shoshone Lake, this geyser basin
is reached only by hiking or by boat. One of the highest concentrations
of geysers in the world is found here, with more than 80 in a 1,600
x 800 feet (488 x 244 m) area.
From
1926 to 1935, scientists Allen and Day conducted studies of the
area and noted that the eastern side of the geyser basin is predominantly
acidic, while the western side is almost entirely alkaline.
