FOUNTAIN PAINT POT AREA
The Fountain Paint Pots are among the most famous mudpots in Yellowstone. The mud is composed of clay and fine particles of silica. Iron oxides tint the white clay with shades of orange, red, brown, and pink. Early accounts describe “every imaginable color of paint,” including greens and yellows, so it’s possible that the paint pots were once more colorful than they are today. Early tour guides joked that the mudpots were used to paint the buildings in the Park (take
