DIFFERENT BEDROCK
A thick, permeable bed of limestone (comprised of calcium carbonate) underlies the Mammoth area rather than rhyolite, the dominant underlying bedrock of other major thermal areas in the park. Thermal waters dissolve and transport calcium carbonate from deep underground to the surface—literally turning the mountain inside-out!
