More rarely, volcanoes are found in the middle of plates. Most of these volcanoes occur within oceanic plates. The Yellowstone volcano is doubly rare, because it is found in the middle of a continental plate.

This map shows selected hotspots throughout the world. It is believed that more than 100 such hotspots have been active during the past 10 million years.
