The "Alphabet Soup" of new and revised programs was established by the federal government in response to the economic crisis of the Great Depression. Many programs begun under President Hoover were renamed and used by the Roosevelt administration in an effort to stop the downard spiral of the economy and get the people believing that the crisis was ending. The various programs can be grouped into three main categories: the "3 R's" of relief, recovery, and reform.
