Below, listen to a Gulf toadfish recorded at North Nest Key, a small key located in the northeastern part of Florida Bay. Keep in mind that a backcountry permit is required to camp at all backcountry campsites in the park, including North Nest Key.

Toadfish are one of only a few fish species that make sounds loud enough for people to hear. Try a round of Name That Tune: Everglades Edition to see if you can distinguish the sounds of a Gulf toadfish from those of an Eastern screech owl.

Spectrogram of Gulf toadfish
Spectrogram of Gulf toadfish. Also called sonogram, spectral waterfall, voiceprint, or voicegram, a spectrogram is a visual representation of the spectrum of frequencies in a sound that can be used to analyze the various calls of animals. The horizontal axis represents time and the vertical axis represents frequency. The amplitude of a particular frequency at a particular time is represented by the intensity of color at each point in the image.
