The Across Trophic Level System Simulation (ATLSS) is a suite of computer models used to evaluate alternative restoration plans. ATLSS researchers laid out the groundwork for ecological modeling of Everglades habitats and species for the purpose of evaluating the potential success of proposed restoration projects. Efforts included a conceptual framework linking habitat suitability to hydrology, as well as ecological model development and calibration of the ecological models using field-collected data. ATLSS models were applied to the evaluation of restoration plans during the late 1990s, leading up to the authorization and early implementation efforts of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.
A selection of models developed for this project include a habitat suitability model for the Everglades snail kite, EVERKITE; testing of an individual-based American crocodile demographic model, and an individual-based model simulating the response of cotton rats and silver rice rats on tree islands to variations in surrounding water levels.
