Ranger in the Classroom

In Class Program

Bring the magic of El Malpais to your class with a presentation from a ranger!

Ranger programs are available to schools within a 1-hour distance of El Morro or El Malpais. Programs are about 1-hour long. There is no cost to schools.

Program topics include:
  • Volcanoes (45 min)
    • Younger students learn the basics of how a volcano forms, create a volcano craft, and watch a model baking soda volcano explosion.
    • Older students (5th-8th) create miniature model volcanoes, learn about the different types of volcanoes, how volcanoes form, and experiment with a baking soda and vinegar explosion in their model volcanoes.
  • Animal Detective
    • Upper elementary reccomended. Students learn about how adaptations help animals to survive.
  • Living on Lava
    • Upper elementary reccomended. Students learn how lava is formed and how plants and animals have adapted to survive on such a rough terrain.
  • Who is the National Park Service?
    • Upper elementary reccomended. Students learn about the National Park Service.

To make a reservation:
  • Visit our Bookings page to select a date and time.
  • After you have selected a date, a Ranger will be in touch.
  • Fill out reservation request form within 24 hours of confirming a date and time with the park.
  • Education Reservation Request Forms must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the intended field trip date.
  • Receive confirmation. Your school can not be confirmed until the School Visit Reservation form is recevied.
