Accessibility Information
What to Expect at Wonder LakeThere is no electricity, but potable water is available in the campground.Campers must use the food storage facilities in the campground for all food and scented items (e.g., toothpaste). Fires are not permitted at Wonder Lake, so be sure to bring a camp stove for cooking your meals. Wonder Lake is in a very wet part of the park, and mosquitoes plague the area for much of the summer. A head-net is very useful. A one mile trail leads from the campground to the McKinley River. Hiking off-trail in the area is permitted, though it can be boggy. Waterfowl can often be seen, either on Wonder Lake or the many ponds and small lakes in the area. Beavers, or evidence of them, can be found as well. Larger animals, like moose and grizzly bears, occasionally pass through the area. Campground Basics
Learn more about ranger programs in Wonder Lake Campground Reflection PondOne of the most iconic and often-photographed images of the mountain is from Reflection Pond, just beyond mile 85. The Kantishna transit and Kantishna Experience tour will take you past Reflection Pond. However, Wonder Lake-bound buses turn down a spur road leading to Wonder Lake Campground about half a mile before Reflection Pond. The spot where the Wonder Lake Campground road and the main Denali Park Road meet is called the "Y," since it forms a y-shaped intersection. The Wonder Lake Campground road is about 1.5 miles long—so it's about a two mile walk from Wonder Lake Campground to Reflection Pond. Alternatively, ride any transit bus from the campground up to the main park road, and then look for a Kantishna-bound transit bus (or walk the approximately half-mile from the "Y" to Reflection Pond). |
