SRO Update for March 29, 2023

March 29, 2023 Posted by: Paul Franke, Road Crew Supervisor

Road opening has reached Sable Pass (Mile 39). Crews report 30 inches of snow on the top of Sable Pass, continuing the trend of lower snow levels this year compared to other years. Snow drifts 8 to 12 feet deep have been encountered in the usual places, but are also less deep than usual.

A lot of new drifting has occurred this past week, so be aware of equipment backtracking to clear drifted snow and doing cleanup on portions of the road that have already been plowed.

A snowblower clears snow from the road by sending it far off to the left side of the road in a high snow plume. A few inches of snow remains on the road, but the gravel surface of the road can just be seen through the snow in a few spots.

A road that has been mostly cleared of snow gradually climbs uphill at the base of a mountain. A thin layer of compacted snow remains on the road surface, but lots of gravel underneath can be seen through the snow.
