Getting There

Visitors are encouraged to start their visit at either The Wright Cycle Company Complex/Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center or the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center. Once arriving at one of the interpretive centers, visitors can receive directions to the other sites.

Plane

The nearest airport for scheduled passenger flights is Dayton International Airport. Other major airports within close proximity are Port Columbus International Airport and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Nearby general aviation airports include Dayton Wright Brothers Airport, Moraine Airpark, and Greene County Airport.

Directions to Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center & Wright Cycle Company Complex

From Cincinnati and all points south:

  • Follow I-75 North
  • At Exit 52, head right on the ramp for US-35 / OH-4 South toward Eaton / Xenia
  • Keep left, heading toward Eaton
  • Keep right, heading toward Germantown St
  • Turn left onto OH-4 / Germantown St
  • Turn right onto S Broadway St
  • Turn right onto W 4th St
  • Turn left onto S. Williams. St. for street parking or continue past S. Williams to park in the lot off of W 4th St

From Vandalia and all points north:

  • Follow I-75 South
  • At Exit 53, head right on the ramp for W 3rd St toward Salem Ave / Third St
  • Turn right onto W Third St
  • Turn left onto S. Williams St and go past park visitor center to parking
  • Continue to 4th Street & turn left and proceed into parking lot on your left
  • Visitor Center will be directly next to parking lot

The U.S. 35 westbound exit for Perry Street (left-handed exit).

From Springfield via U.S. 35 Westbound:

  • Take U.S. 35 west
  • Exit at Perry St. (LEFT-SIDED EXIT)
  • Turn right onto Perry St.
  • Turn left onto Washington St.
  • Go over river and take first right onto Edwin C. Moses Blvd
  • Turn left onto Third St.
  • Turn left onto South Williams, park will be on left
  • Follow South Williams to Fourth Street & turn left and proceed into parking lot on your left.

From Indianapolis via U.S. 35 Eastbound:

  • Take U.S. 35 east
  • Exit at James H. McGee Blvd
  • Turn left onto James H. McGee Blvd
  • Turn right onto West Third Street
  • Turn right onto South Williams
  • The Wright Cycle Company Complex will be on your immediate left
  • Follow South Williams to Fourth Street & turn left and proceed into parking lot on your left.

From Eastbound or Westbound I-70:

  • Follow I-70 to OH-235 S/OH-4
  • Follow OH-4S and OH-444 N
  • Merge onto OH-444 and get into the right hand lane before the light at Kauffman Rd.
  • Merge onto 444 and get in the right hand lane before Kauffman Rd.
  • Turn right onto Kauffman Rd., and then at your first right, make a slight turn immediatelly after the bridge
  • This entrance has two gates. As you pull in look to the right for the open Wright Hill gate
  • This area is an acvitive military installtion, but the memorial is open to the public
  • Proceed through the historic Wright Hill stone fence/gateway
  • Use caution and maintain the speed limit as you crest the hill
  • The visitor center is located close by on the left and the area is marked with a public crossing to the memorial
  • Please park in the lot just passed the visitor center
  • Tour buses may also park in the tour bus parking indicated by sigange

From all points via State Route 4:

  • Exit S.R. 4 at S.R. 444
  • Merge onto 444 and get in the right hand lane before Kauffman Rd.

The Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center is located near the National Museum of the United States Air Force at the intersection of State Route 444 and Kauffman Road. 2380 Memorial Road, Dayton, OH. The site is located on an active military base and so GPS can often be tricky. Please make sure to use care when following a GPS route to ensure that all roads on your route are public and accessibile before you begin driving.

 
 

From Eastbound or Westbound I-70:

  • Follow I-70 to OH-235 S/OH-4
  • Follow OH-4S and OH-444 N
  • Turn into Communications Blvd in Wright-Patterson Air Force Base at Gate 16A.
  • The gate is a public access point for the community golf course
  • Huffman Prairie Flying Field is located behind the golf course at Gate 16 A.
  • Once you enter the gate proceed along the route until you come to a stop sign
  • Turn left onto Hebble Creek Rd.
  • Follow Hebble Creek until the intersection with Marl Rd.
  • Turn right onto Marl Rd.
  • Use caution and allow passing as the road drops to one unmarked lane
  • Follow Marl Rd. until you see the National Park Service Sign for Huffman Prairie Flying Field
  • Parking and a comfort station are available on the left
  • Accessible parking is located close to the Huffman Prairie trailhead and replica 1905 hangar
  • Be cautious of people walking and crossing the road
  • Exit via Marl Rd. to Hebble Creek and onto 444 at Gate 16A.

  • Head north on Williams St.
  • Turn left onto Third St. at the light
  • Travel three blocks west
  • Turn right onto Paul Laurence Dunbar Street
  • Travel three blocks north on Paul Laurence Dunbar Street
  • Paul Laurence Dunbar house will be on left
  • The Paul Laurence Dunbar Visitor Center entrance is located of Edison St.
  • Park along Dunbar, or turn left on Edison to park near the visitor center entrance
 

Public Transportation

The nearest Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority bus stop to The Wright Cycle Company Complex is located at the intersection of West Third and Williams Street. There is no public transportation to the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center.
