2019 Summer Programs

Join park staff on daily guided walks to a lava tube this summer.

Attend a guided walk or talk to learn more about Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve! Summer programs are offered June 2 through September 2. Check out our event calendar for additional details, September schedule, and for information on special events.

Daily Programs

Inferno Cone Hike: 9:30 am, 0.5 miles, 45 min.
Climb a volcano! The trail to the top is steep but it rewards you with panoramic views of the Great Rift. Meet at the Inferno Cone parking lot.

Patio Talk: 11:30 am & 1:30 pm, 15 min.
Enjoy a short presentation about the natural or cultural history of Craters of the Moon. Check the visitor center for daily topics. Meet at the Visitor Center Plaza.

Cave Walk: 1:30 pm & 3:30 pm, 1 mile, 1.5 hrs.
Follow the trail through a sea of ropey lava into the strange underground world of a lava tube. Wear sturdy shoes; bring a flashlight, and a cave permit. Meet at the Caves Area (Stop 7) trailhead. Please make sure to help protect our bats by not wearing/bringing anything into our caves that has previously been in any other cave or mine.

Evening Stroll: 7 pm, 0.25 mile, 30 min.
Join us in the cool evening hours for a short walk from thecampground to a panoramic view of the North Crater cinder cone and the lava landscape that surrounds it. Meet at the campground amphitheater.

Additional Programs, Friday - Sunday

Patio Talk: 3:30 pm -15 min.
Enjoy a short presentation about the natural or cultural history of Craters of the Moon. Check the visitor center for daily topics. Meet at the Visitor Center plaza.

Junior Ranger Program: 8 pm, 30 min.
Learn to be a ranger! Fun activities for kids of all ages, Parents are welcome, too. Meet at the campground amphitheater.

Evening Program: 9 pm, Sept. at 8:30 pm, 45 min.
Rangers present different programs at the campground amphitheater. Bring a jacket and carry a flashlight for the walk back to your campsite. Join us for special astronomy programs every Friday including star gazing and full moon hikes.
