Backcountry Permits

the Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics logo

A free permit is required for overnight trips into the Craters of the Moon Wilderness. A permit is also required for day-use visits into the north end of the park. These can be obtained at the visitor center during business hours. These permits enable the National Park Service to monitor how many people are using these areas, to inform visitors of regulations, and to make sure that they return safely.

Wilderness Regulations:

  • No wood fires. Use backpacking stoves for cooking.
  • Bicycles and other mechanized equipment are not allowed.
  • Pets are not permitted in the backcountry or on trails.
  • Camping is not permitted within one mile of the Tree Molds trailhead.
  • All wilderness caves are closed to the public to protect bats and prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome.
  • Remember to Leave No Trace when camping. Please pack everything you bring out with you.
  • Groups are limited to 8 people.
