Crater Lake National Park is seeking public input on the scope of an environmental assessment (EA) to be prepared for the West Panhandle Forest Restoration Project in conformance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The objectives of this project are to restore forests and healthy ecosystems and to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire in the Panhandle area of the park, a 2.4-mile piece of land extending from the park’s southern boundary along Highway 62. The West Panhandle Forest Restoration Project is proposed for the portion of the Panhandle west of Annie Creek.

Public scoping is the initial step in the NEPA public planning process used by the National Park Service (NPS) to engage agencies, organizations, and the public early in project planning by soliciting input on proposed actions, environmental issues, possible project alternatives, and pertinent sources of data. Information gathered during public scoping will be used to help develop the range of issues and alternatives addressed in the EA.

Comments on the West Panhandle Forest Restoration Project can be submitted during the 4 week public scoping period, from December 19, 2015, until January 16, 2016. Comments should be submitted online, sent by mail, or hand delivered. The preferred method for receiving comments is online via the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/CRLApanhandle. Click on the "Open for Comment" link to comment. Mailed comments should be sent to West Panhandle EA c/o Superintendent, Crater Lake National Park, P.O. Box 7, Crater Lake, Oregon, 97604.

Comments will not be accepted by fax, email, or in any way not specified above. Bulk comments submitted on behalf of others will not be accepted. Please be aware that personally identifiable information submitted with comments may be made available to the public.
