The Crater Lake National Park Science and Learning Center is sponsoring a survey and inventory of Crater Lake's beetles (Coleoptera) on Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  This Beetle BioBlitz is an opportunity for "citizen scientists" from the general public to join park staff and other scientists to characterize the biological and genetic diversity of beetles occupying the Crater Lake landscape.  Participants will work in small teams led by regional experts and university students and will learn how to safely sample, handle, and identify beetles in their natural habitats.

The Science and Learning Center will also offer a public seminar with presentations delivered by participating scientists on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Rim Community House in Rim Village.  These presentations are an opportunity for park visitors and staff to learn more about beetles in the Pacific Northwest.

Participants under age 16 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.  Registrants can select terrain preferences based on different physical abilities, but some hiking off trail is expected.  More information will be provided upon registration.  Space is limited and all participants must register by Tuesday, July 5, 2016.  For more information, and to register go to https://www.nps.gov/rlc/craterlake/2016-crater-lake-bioblitz.htm.

It is not necessary to participate in the bioblitz field trips to join in the fun and learn more about beetles and their role in the Crater Lake ecosystem.  During the day on Saturday, July 23rd there will also be park rangers to show visitors the diversity of beetles collected and lead hands-on activities for kids of all ages.  Come and "Meet the Beetles!"

The Crater Lake Science and Learning Center provides research and educational opportunities to promote the understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of our nation's natural and cultural heritage.  It is funded through an endowment from the Oregon Community Foundation made possible from the sale of the Oregon Crater Lake commemorative license plates.
