Colonial National Historical Park will implement a temporary closure of the Jamestown Island Loop Drive beginning on Monday December 2, to safely rehabilitate three wooden bridges on the drive. In collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the park will perform necessary repairs to the decks and pilings on the Pitch and Tar Bridge, Long Bridge, and Blacks Point Bridge. During this work the tour road will be closed to all visitors, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicle traffic.

The Island Loop crosses various creeks and waterways, and the numerous timber bridges provide visitors opportunities for unobstructed views of the tidal marshes and features associated with Jamestown Island. These bridges have not received substantial work in nearly twenty years and need repair.  The work will include full deck replacement on two bridges and select deck replacement on the other. All bridges will have pile repairs and encapsulation, to ensure that the bridges remain safe for visitors to cross.

For the safety of construction crews and visitors, there will be no access to this area during the duration of the project. The Island Loop Drive will remain closed to all visitors, including pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicle traffic.

The Island Loop Drive will reopen when it is safe to do so, likely in the Spring of 2025.  During the temporary closure, the park encourages visitors to explore the rest of Jamestown Island and other nearby recreation opportunities.
