Showy Goldeneye - Viguiera multiflora

Visitors to Cedar Breaks often confuse Showy Goldeneye with Little Sunflower (Helianthella uniflora) because both species often form large fields of yellow daisy flowers. Showy Goldeneye flowers later in the season, however, and a close look usually finds several flowers per stem (hence, multiflora) vs. one (uniflora) in Little Sunflower.

Showy Goldeneye’s leaves are usually shorter and narrower and its heads have fewer petal-like ray flowers (10-14 vs. 13-17). Showy Goldeneye is easy to grow from seed and is often used in seed mixes for wildflower meadows or along highways. It occurs from Montana south to New Mexico in foothill to montane elevations.
