Aspen Bluebells - Mertensia arizonica

Like Columbine and Southern Ligusticum, Aspen Bluebells usually grows along the forest edges at Cedar Breaks where they receive protection from strong winds.  Aspen Bluebells also benefit from snow lingering under trees and partial shade, keeping the soil moist.

Aspen Bluebells are palatable to both sheep and cattle. The meadows have been protected from grazing for many years allowing these flowers to grow a healthy population at Cedar Breaks. There is also another Bluebell species found at Cedar Breaks, Mertensia ciliata, which differs in minor leaf and flower characteristics.
