Alexander "Sandie" Swift Pendleton was a Confederate staff officer during the Civil War. He served under several Confederate generals, including Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Jubal Early. Pendleton was killed following the Battle of Fisher's Hill during the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign.

Bernard Graves, Amherst Light Artillery. Bernhard enlisted in 1861 and fought in numerous battles, including Cedar Creek.

Charles Russell Lowell, Jr., was a US Army Colonel killed at the Battle of Cedar Creek in 1864. A monument in Middletown, Virginia, commemorates his sacrifice.

Dwight Lither Pond, 90th New York. Fought at and survived the battles of Third Winchester, Fisher’s Hill and Cedar Creek.

Edward Cary, 44th Virginia. Cary is pictured with his sister, Emma. He enlisted at the age of 18 and was killed at the Battle of Port Republic, June 9, 1862.

Eliza Clinedinst lived through the Battle of New Market and ultimately cared for the wounded and dying soldiers.

Eri D. Woodbury captured the flag of the 12th North Carolina during the Union counterattack at Cedar Creek. He later accompanied Gen. Custer to Washington, D.C. to present captured Confederate flags to the War Department. For his actions he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Major George A. “Sandy” Forsyth was one of Sheridan’s most trusted aides who accompanied Sheridan on the famous ride from Winchester to Cedar Creek.

George Armstrong Custer rode a meteoric rise to fame during the Civil War. Fighting in many battles, Custer took command of a cavalry division during the 1864 Shenandoah Valley campaign. He attained his highest rank of brevet Major General after the Battle of Cedar Creek. Custer was killed in 1876 at Little Bighorn while attacking a Lakota and Cheyenne village.

Best known today for his military campaigns against the Indians before and after the Civil War, George Crook rose from the command of the 36th Ohio Infantry to the command of a cavalry division which fought in Tennessee and southwestern Virginia. During the war he became friends with future president Rutherford B. Hayes.
