 The Bodie Island Lighthouse will be open for daily climbing from Friday, April 18 through Oct. 13, 2025. Following multiple days of snow and ice removal from park roads and sidewalks, National Park Service visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial will reopen at normal times on Friday, Jan. 24. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing on Friday; however, visitors should use caution while driving and walking through the parks, particularly during the colder morning hours. National Park Service visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site (Fort Raleigh) and Wright Brothers National Memorial will remain closed Thursday, Jan. 23. Fort Raleigh’s shoreline erosion public meeting, originally scheduled for Jan. 23, is postponed—a new date will be announced in the coming days. Ahead of an impending winter storm, National Park Service visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore), Fort Raleigh National Historic Site (Fort Raleigh) and Wright Brothers National Memorial will close at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 and remain closed Wednesday, Jan. 22. Outdoor areas at the Seashore and Fort Raleigh will remain open.  After observing smoke inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Bodie Island Double Keepers’ Quarters (DKQ), staff from Eastern National—the operator of the building’s retail store—called 911 at around 12 p.m. today, Jan. 7. All occupants safely exited the building. Following a recent interim response action by the Army Corps of Engineers and consultations with the Dare County Department of Health of Human Services, Cape Hatteras National Seashore has reopened an approximately two-tenths-of-a-mile section of beach starting at the southernmost jetty in Buxton and continuing to the south Three separate deliveries of construction equipment associated with the lifting of the Ocracoke Double Keepers’ Quarters are scheduled to occur the week of Dec. 9. During the deliveries, Lighthouse Road—between approximately Loop Road and Martha Jane Lane—will be closed for up to 30 minutes. Loop Road will remain accessible for those looking for an alternate route during the closures.  During the overnight hours of Nov. 14-15, an unoccupied house collapsed at 23241 Surf Side Drive in Rodanthe, North Carolina. Efforts to respond to and begin cleanup operations is currently limited due to severe weather conditions and the closure of N.C. Highway 12 between the Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe. Cape Hatteras National Seashore is urging caution on roads and beaches from tonight into this weekend, due to the potential for strong wind gusts, elevated tides and heavy rainfall associated with a low-pressure system.  Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore) recently awarded a $1.7 million contract to Yorkshire Industries (New York, New York) to remove the top layer of asphalt, regrade and apply a new layer of asphalt in the approximately 195,650 square foot parking lot at the Seashore’s Oregon Inlet Marina. The resurfaced parking lot will be elevated to address flooding issues, and the parking lot striping and drainage system will also be repaired.
