Photos of the Week

On the afternoon of December 26, 1989, a fossilized walrus skull was found on the beach between Salvo and Avon. The skull was analyzed at the Smithsonian Institution and is thought to be over 36,000 years old! Shortly after analyzing the skull, the Smithsonian Institution reported that the skull was one of the best preserved and complete specimens for the age that their staff had ever examined.



 
Seashore Updates

• Columbus Day (October 8) is the last day this season to climb the Bodie Island and Cape Hatteras Lighthouses.
• If you enjoyed the Photos of the Week, you may be interested to know that National Fossil Day (October 17) is an annual celebration held to highlight the scientific and educational value of paleontology and the importance of preserving fossils for future generations.
• For beach and ocean condition updates, go to: http://go.nps.gov/beachaccess.
• Cape Point Campground loops C, D, E, F, G, and H reopened on October 1. This year’s camping season ends the Monday after Thanksgiving.
• On the morning of October 20, we hope you take a short drive north of the Seashore to attend the grand reopening ceremony for the Wright Brothers National Memorial visitor center in Kill Devil Hills. The ceremony and ribbon-cutting event will begin at 9:30 am.
